Verna du Toit was born in 1976 in the town of Graaff-Reinet in the Eastern Cape of South Africa. Richly imbued in history it is easy to understand how Verna’s cultural connection to Africa and her deep sense of passion for people has influenced many of her works of art.
Verna belongs to those group of artists we term Realists. Her art covers an exceptionally wide range of content and she works in various media such as oil, acrylic, pencil, charcoal, watercolour and mixed media. Many of her works include magnificent portraits with particular emphasis on the eyes. They depict a sense of honesty which captures their uniqueness. This honesty is carried throughout her artworks which include figures both clothed and unclothed, landscape and interiors where she enjoys the freedom of expression to say it as it is. Her art can be characterized as symbolic, surrealistic and expressionistic.
From the beginning of her professional career, Verna’s work has been in high demand including commissions and exhibitions both locally and abroad. It was whilst exhibiting at Hout Bay Gallery and The Lisa King Gallery in Cape Town that she was approached by Joachim Spelling and Astrid Fahr respectively to exhibit in Germany. She has also exhibited at the Artec Gallery in Port Elizabeth where she presently resides and works from her Studio.
