There is a NEW kid on the block called Back In Town – a private Concierge and Travel Agency, based in Cape Town focused on matching clients with the perfect accommodation for their trip to the “Mother City” and surrounds. Personalized and tailor-made travel experiences are unique and carefully chosen to ensure the travelers time in our beautiful country is the best it can be.
I am sold.
To find our more about Back In Town we asked Sarah Michell (Owner and Travel Specialist) a few questions:
Please introduce us to Back In Town? How did it all start?
BACK IN TOWN is a Private Concierge and Travel Agency. We are based in Cape Town, South Africa and specialise in luxury accommodation and tailor-made travel experiences in Cape Town and the greater Western Provence.
Since I can remember, I wanted to start my own business. Growing up, we were all encouraged to dream big and my dream was to open a hotel. The appeal of being part of what makes someone’s experience in a foreign country exciting, comfortable and memorable is what I love about the hospitality industry. After spending over 4 years at sea on luxury super yachts, I decided to return home and start something of my own.
Having travelled extensively, I found that no matter how much research I did on the destination, the experience was always more enjoyable when guided by a local. South Africa is an amazing place, extremely diverse in languages, culture, landscapes, activities, food, accommodation and hospitality. There is in fact so much at times it can be overwhelming. Private Concierge therefore seemed the missing link. I want to give visitors to Cape Town the opportunity to experience the best of what my beautiful home has to offer, while matching accommodation and tour options to their individual interest and style.
What makes Back In Town services unique?
I’d say the key is the personalised service. We understand that everyone is different and that some work needs to go into getting the travel package to fit the individual. We therefore take the time to get to know our clients and to understand their interests – food preferences, accommodation style and preferred type of service – prior to their arrival. This allows us to recommend hotels and put together tailor-made activities that meet their specific requirements.
Part of the reason we can do this effectively is that we only recommend properties that we have personally visited and know hold a high standard of service and accommodation.
Other perks include complimentary Concierge service to all guests who book their accommodation through us for the duration of their stay and a complimentary bottle of wine!
Tell us about your own personal travel style?
I’m definitely an organised traveller. I feel a well-researched base plan provides the platform for spontaneity. I enjoy trying out all sorts of styles but I’m most comfortable in what I’d call ‘unpretentious luxury’ – a welcoming environment where attention to detail is of utmost importance. For instance, two of my favourite travel destinations outside of South Africa are Costa Rica and a small town in the south of France called St Paul de Vence. Here we stayed in fantastic boutique hotels, and as one would expect from luxury establishments, they provided a daily turn down and breakfast cooked to order. What made both places unique and special to me is that we were welcomed by the owners themselves, who like myself, are in this business because it is what they love. This private welcome made us feel as though we had arrived home, everything that we needed was on hand before we even asked. The relaxation this generates whilst on holiday is truly liberating, but most importantly I felt comfortable and welcome in these hotels, the service was second to non, yet at a distance that allows you to be yourself, do what you want and genuinely unwind. Next on my list are New Zealand and Bali.
Where can we find you on your leisure day?
You would find me spending quality time with my family and friends, exploring the extensive winelands with my partner, in a bikram yoga class on a Saturday morning or walking on the Sea Point Promenade.
Introduce us to some of your favorite dining places?
Cape Town was recently voted the “Third best foodie city in the world” by Conde Nast Traveller proving that we have some superb restaurants in the Western Cape, which was also backed up by The Diners Club votes for the 50 best restaurants in the world in 2015, with one well known Cape Town restaurant placing 28th. This makes it difficult for me to choose my favourite due to all the choice. However here are a few that I enjoy at the moment;
One of my favorite places to go on a sunny afternoon in Cape Town for a glass of bubbles and a selection of tapas and pizzas is The Rumbullion at The Roundhouse Restaurant in Camps Bay. It is the perfect place to sit outside with friends and family and take in the stunning views over Camps Bay and the Atlantic Ocean.
I also love Mykonos Taverna in Sea Point, their Greek food is so delicious and the service is relaxed yet attentive.
Café Bon Bon at La Petite Dauphine in Franschhoek is fantastic. Their food is delicious and the chef makes an effort to use high quality, regional produce that is in season.
Finally, I have to mention Tokara Restaurant, located on top of the Helshoogte Pass, just outside Stellenbosch. It is one of my favorite fine dining restaurants in the winelands. It has breathtaking views over Stellenbosch and False Bay and the menu, while changing frequently, is always exceptional quality and includes a range of dishes that appeal to all ages.
What advise would you give to travelers for that ultimate luxury experience?
Never be shy to share your preferences, dislikes and wishes with your travel agent. The more we know about you before you arrive, the more likely we are to get it right.
