“Groot Constantia’s revered history tells us how a man’s love of wine established the first wine farm in South Africa. By going back 330 years, we come to understand how 891 morgen of land created the origins of the South African wine industry, and how every owner thereafter contributed to what we know as Groot Constantia today.”- See more here.
This year Groot Constantia Celebrates their 330th Birthday and what a great way to join the celebration than an opportunity to learn about the estate through a cellar tour and an amazing chocolate and wine pairing. Deliciousness!
The Estate is located in the heart of Constantia Valley, with magnificent views over Cape Town and the mountains. And as they say at Groot Constantia :
“It is here that we believe time should be taken to first understand and then consume our award-winning wines.”
My last visit to Groot Constantia was in 2010, yes 5 years ago – so I was very excited to visit again. We arrived on a chilly but beautiful day and enjoyed nice long walk around the estate (including Historical Bath) before heading to a cellar for our tour.
Wine Cellar experience helps you to take that step back in time and experience how wines are made. Friendly Guide (with a great sense of humor) walks you through the process during a 45-60 minute tour in their modern cellar, followed by a wine tasting and audio visual screening. Tours starts every hour on the hour from 10am.
How much passion, knowledge and hard work is put into the wine making is to be discovered during the tour.
Chocolate and Wine Pairing was next – I was very keen to try Sauvignon Blanc and Pinotage as these are my “old” favorite. But what a surprising discovery have I made about Groot Constantia Chardonnay. I am not a Chardonnay person and loved it. There is a saying “ABC” = Anything But Chardonnay and it doesn’t apply to me anymore.
We spend a while discussing each wine and tastes, even “arguing” at the stage.
We’ve learned that when pairing wine with chocolate, you seek wines that have the same flavor notes as the chocolate (and that’s anything from nutty, berry to minty flavors) or simply you look for contrasts.
Loved the experience.
Before heading off go for a walk to Historical Bath, visit Cloete Cellar (Iziko Museum) or one of the two restaurants (Simon’s or Jonkershuis) to enjoy the magnificent views with a few glasses of vino.
