If you truly love nature, you won’t mind getting up before the sunrise to make your way to the meeting point outside of Oudtshoorn – from where you will start your Meerkat Experience.
You will meet Devey and from there you will travel a short 10 km drive to the Meerkat burrows. You will be welcome with a warm mug of coffee and given camp chair. After your coffee (much needed this time of the morning) a short walk to a Meerkat burrow where you will be seated to wait for the family to show themselves.
Great part of the whole experience is an introduction given by Devey who’s really passionate about Meerkats and other wildlife: do’s and dont’s, interesting facts about their behavior & some humor of course. Then you wait!
You can enjoy beautiful landscape views and sunrise.
When the sun comes up the first Meerkat is out too and soon after the whole family including babies playing with each other and running around. They would then stand upright using their tail to keep balance and turn their small bellies to the sun to absorb some heat much needed after cold desert nights. They are so cute!
One or two of the group will serve as a lookouts, watching for birds such as hawks or eagles. The rest will play and stay busy foraging for food which they normally do all day until the sun goes down. Meerkats will eat insects, lizards, scorpions and more.
What we Love about the experience:
- We saw Meerkats in their natural habitat – and their natural behavior;
- No feeding or other interaction with the animals was ever attempt and is not allowed;
- We have learned a lot about them from Devey, who’s done so much of his own research and observed and worked with Meerkats in the area;
