With elegant decor, great service, Karoo breakfasts, dinners by candlelight, walking tours and ghost stories – Matjiesfontein Lord Milner Hotel takes you back in time offering more than you think.
Matjiesfontein is in the Klein Karoo, 250 scenic kilometers north from Cape Town, off the N1 Cape Town to Johannesburg.
We spent 2 nights in Matjiesfontien on the way to Oudtshoorn. Arriving quite tired after a long day full of activities we were greeted by a friendly staff and immediately fell in love with this charming places feeling like we step back in time.
The Hotel is beautiful and with over 50 bedrooms is well maintained, specious entrance, very high ceilings & spectacular staircase, restaurant, lounge for guests use.
Our room was a good size with large balcony overlooking hotels courtyard and with a view of a rail station. Bed was very comfortable. Nice bathroom with bath and separate shower including towels and amenities. But what really got my attention is how clean and looked after everything was despite so many years having passed. (Note: no TV and Weak Wi-Fi Signal – but that didn’t bother us at all)
Breakfasts are served with Karoo love. Good Coffee and lovely buffet with local produce will set you up for a day. Menu includes great Karoo omelette – must to try.
Dinners by candlelight were served from 7 pm in the dining room offering delicious South African and Karoo cuisine (including vegan option).Good service, ambiance and atmosphere.
At the Laird’s Arms we enjoyed some evening entertainment: singing, piano playing, enjoying a pint or two listening to many stories from the back in the day.
Matjiesfontein is incredibly relaxed and overflowing with history. We spend the day exploring and learning a lot by visiting the Transport Museum features vintage cars and trains, Marie Rawdon Museum which exhibits items from the Victorian era, Travellers Chapel and so much more… An amazing experience.
And after a long day of discoveries we enjoyed some relaxing time by the pool located at the back of the hotel, a short walk through a beautiful garden.
