Riebeek Kasteel is located a mere 80 minute drive from Cape Town. This popular Western Cape town together with its sister town Riebeek West forms the heart and soul of the magnificent Riebeek Valley.
The Riebeek Valley is known for its wheat, wines and olives. It is popular for rural tourism, arts and crafts, and a sought after retirement option. The Olive Festival is annually held early in May, except this year, – cancelled due to the water crises. July marks the Berg River Canoe Marathon.
Another reason to visit is the must see and experience Merindol Manor.
Merindol Manor, a 4 star graded Guesthouse, is located in one of the oldest Victorian mansions in the valley. It was built in 1904 by the Malan family, owners of Allesverloren Wine Estate.
Merindol Manor, recently under new ownership, has been fully renovated. They took care to keep its authenticity and appeal. Their door is always open to welcome guests.
This owner-run Guesthouse is a real gem, offering four fully equipped enchanting rooms. All needs catered for.
ROOMS: We stayed in the spacious Savannah Room -heavenly. We loved the wooden floors and decor. A unique feature is the four-poster bed dressed in Egyptian cotton linen. When last did you see one, let alone sleep in one? Thoughtful touches create a homely feel. Amenities include tea & coffee facilities complete with a Nespresso coffee machine, flat-screen TV with satellite channel, WIFI and mini bar fridge.
We absolutely loved the bathroom, almost the size of our bedroom, with signature magnificent copper bath and a separate shower. Sadly due to the Drought in the Western Cape we were unable to use it, always a next time. All amenities are locally and organically made. What more can you ask for?
Tastefully African designs and art can be found throughout the premises. This is a nod to the discerning eye, effectively enhancing the ambiance and the surrounds.
Not to mention the fireplace ideal for those cold winter evenings.
MANOR HOUSE: public areas are comfortably, yet stylishly decorated. This ensures a relaxed atmosphere for guests of all ages. The well appointed library boasts a substantial selection of books – albums to an assortment of specialty and travel books. The comfortable seating area invites you to read, relax and indulge in a complimentary glass of Allesverloren wine.
The “Game Centre” is ideal for those competitive fun loving spirits out there.
GARDEN deserves considerable recognition as it is an artful arrangement of herbs, vegetables, decadent flowers, olive tree, grapevines and my favourite, Frangipani trees.
A local nursery created this oasis of tranquillity and peace, where birdsong is evident, regardless of the time of day.
We enjoyed an afternoon in these lush grounds, simply appreciating it and the gazebo, especially in these times of drought. We felt like Alice in Wonderland.
Views of the Kastelberg mountain are magnificent.
BREAKFAST: A must! It is a communal affair in the open plan kitchen combined dining area. The delicious home-made treats include freshly squeezed juice of the day, freshly baked breads, homemade yogurt and Belgian eats. The piece de resistance has to be the mouth-watering breakfast rice pudding.
POOL: It is located at the back of the manor house. A perfect getaway, after a day of exploring, complete with comfy loungers and towels. Merindol Manor has its own bore hole that is used to fill the pool. We loved this time just soaking up the sun and catching up with some reading.
SERVICE is exceptional. The attention to detail is evident throughout the property. Their warm welcome is one of the best ones we’ve had. Their generosity is second to none, apparent in many return visits. We are already planning our next trip.
If you are looking for a getaway close to Cape Town, choose Merindol Manor in Riebeek West. Here you can relax, unwind and will be extremely well looked after. You won’t be disappointed; in fact all your expectations will be exceeded.
