an estate or large farm in Portugal, Brazil, and other Portuguese-speaking countries.
We have our own Fazenda right here in Swellendam South Africa. Fazenda Log Cabins opened its doors in December 2017. An alluring addition to this picturesque town of Swellendam – one of my favourite towns in the Western Cape.
We had the pleasure of experiencing 2 nights here. We absolutely loved it. Why?
The new FAZENDA is a sister property to well known De Companjie Heritage House & Restaurant – so we knew we were in for a special treat.
We arrived late afternoon and headed straight to De Companjie where their gregarious staff greeted us like old friends with welcome drinks – memorable. We were swiftly escorted by the owner to FAZENDA located about 10min drive from Swellendam. This was via a lesser known part (to us). A scenic route of natural habitat and fruit farms greeted us.
When we arrived at FAZNDA we knew we would depart with our hearts rooted here. ”A home that our feet may leave but not our hearts”
FAZENDA consist of two spectacular cottages. A location enfolded by nature, offering a view with all that nature has on offer here, enhanced by the mountains overlooking the small dam. Each cottage has an open plan kitchenette, bedroom, bathroom, large patio area with braai facilities and outside parking bay.
The Kitchenette include mini fridge, stove, Nespresso coffee machine, pots and pans, cutlery, crockery and glasses. All hand-picked by the owner to fit the decor and overall feel of the place. This is a place where just being is not only enough but mandatory. The interior design and furniture are sourced from local stores and designers making it proudly South African.
The open plan bedroom with its quality linen and plush blankets and cushions overlooks the dam.
The bathroom with its walk in shower and basin offers all amenities and towels.
Braai facilities include wood and braai-ing equipment. We used these facilities twice during our stay and loved it.
The minimalistic modern decor lends a cosy and comfortable feel to the cottages. This ensuring easy living. “La Dolce Vita” personified.
A wooden deck wraps around part of this enchanting property, effectively capturing the sun and guaranteeing that it can be enjoyed all day long. It is here that we spend most of our time. The weather gods smiled upon us as we were able to fully experience and enjoy the breathtaking surroundings.
This is ideal for enjoying your morning coffee, whilst listening to the sounds of nature. Evenings are for simple indulgence in the peacefulness.
This area is a perfect fit for outdoor and nature enthusiasts alike, or for those who adore nature and simply can’t get enough. Walking and hiking trails, within a short walk from the log cabins, are clearly marked. We explored the forests of Swellendam for the better part of the day even discovering a waterfall.
Small boats are available for exploring, fishing and finding easy assess-able romantic picnic spots. This is nature’s complete canvas of sunsets, birdlife and indigenous forests with a backdrop of magnificent mountains.
As for those who are serious about mushroom foraging, this is the place to be.
This area is a requisite for bird-watching; in fact it’s pure paradise for beginners, enthusiasts and experts alike. Nature right on your doorstep include insects, baboons and even goats. Like they say, nature is not a place to visit, it is home.
I can only imagine how spectacular FAZENDA must be during other seasons. As the song so right states “everywhere you go, you always take the weather with you.” This oasis will embrace your home coming, regardless of the weather. I for one … cannot wait to return one day.
