Product Review: Pesto by Pesto Princess – arguably the best pesto in South Africa.

Traditional pesto is made from just basil, pine nuts, cheese, garlic, and olive oil and for me it is usually too oily and garlicky.

I have seen the Pesto Princess brand before but never actually tried it until Antonia from The Vegan Rainbow Blog introduced me to their products through her Insta-Stories and then organised a hamper of products to try.

I must say I was very surprised when I opened a first jar and did not see any oil on the surface. Instead beautiful creamy paste with rich colour, smelled and looked delicious.

Their pesto range varies from not only traditional pesto but also options with the twist: Coriander and Chilli Pesto, Rocket Pesto, Thai Pesto and many more.

All the ingredient in each of the pesto jars seems to be completing each other. The pesto are not heavy which I really liked and I tried them tossed with the pasta, over grilled chicken, on sandwiches and french fries. Every-time flavorful, not too strong and perfect for me.

Their website says that Pesto Princess destalk the basil for their products by hand and only use the soft leaves to produce their creamy and smooth sauces.

“We peel our own garlic, and grate our own cheese, so that we can guarantee there are no nasties in your product. We buy our herbs from small scale farmers wherever possible, who use organic sprays for pest control, and farm sustainably. We love local, and for that reason have ditched the pine nut in favour of cashews and almonds which are grown closer to home. We use glass jars since they are the best keeper of food products and can be recycled.” (source Pesto Princess Website)

Except lovely pesto range Pesto Princess offers sauces, pastes as well as recently range of soups.

My ultimate favorites: Sundried Tomato Pesto, Red Pesto with Roasted Red Peppers and Coriander and Chilli Pesto.

VERDICT: Cannot wait to try more.

TIPS:
*  check out their website for Royal Recipes – that will give you many ideas of how to use your Pesto Princess jar;

* some of their products are vegan;
