The essence of Africa – Sparkling Tanzanite Tour Experience at The Diamond Works / Cape Town, South Africa

“Mount Kilimanjaro, known as the White Mountain, ‘mountain of greatness’ formed by massive tectonic activity over 585 million years ago in the northern part of Tanzania, brought prosperity and fortune in many ways for its people. One reason being, that it is home to a rare and exquisite gem called Tanzanite.

Legend has it that along the majestic foothills of this beautiful mountain; a Masaai tribesman had been walking and stumbled upon the shimmering lights of crystals, he celebrated by gathering as much as possible in the hope that it would bring fortune to his people.

These findings were of great significance bewildering gemmologists worldwide with its extreme rarity and uniqueness. The trichroism of crystal form is a natural phenomenon with its breath taking hues of violets, blues, and purples.

Tanzanite has become one of the most sought-after pieces for collectors throughout the world because of its historic heritage that is limited to a single generation of people. ‘One in a million’ as they say.”*** (Source TDW)

The Diamond Works Institute is located at the Foreshore, Cape Town – one of their unique offerings is the Tanzanite tour with a polishing demonstration (NOTE: The Diamond Works CPT is the only jeweller in the Southern Hemisphere with this offering).

We recently had the opportunity to experience the tour.  After our informed visit to The Diamond Works Institute I am in total awe of this exquisite gemstone and filled with so much appreciation   for the Tanzanite craftsmanship and knowledge.

The tour is focused on educating visitors about the history and mystery of this precious gemstone, but most of all on its rarity. The 30min tour includes a glass of bubbles, a history corner, visual exhibitions as well as replicas of raw Tanzanites (including Diamonds).  We were informed of how Tanzanites are created, mined, cut and polished.

We learned about the 4Cs: cut, color, clarity, and carat (weight) – which are the most important characteristics to understand when making a tanzanite or diamond purchase.

We also had an opportunity to compare different colour Tanzanites and hear about the grading methods that determinate their true value.

It was absolutely fascinating…

“Tanzanite, a blue mystical gem, has earned a reputation for possessing magical powers. It is believed that it has the power to elevate the bearer’s mood, restore spiritual balance and bring good fortune.”**(TDW Website)

The Diamond Works Tanzanite tour is one of those unique experiences that are fully dedicated to create an awareness of the rare and precious gemstone and educate at the same time (which is very important).

It is a dazzling ‘experience’ that cannot be missed this season.
