West Coast Fossil Park is located close to Langebaan in the Western Cape, around 150km from the Mother City and “is world-renowned for its exceptionally well-preserved fossil faunal remains that date to the terminal Miocene/early Pliocene (circa 5.2 million years ago).”***
Their new visitors center and museum is an absolute must when visiting the area. Not only it is a very interesting and educational experience but also great place for family day out.
Guided, 45 min tours will give you an amazing insights about prehistoric findings of long extinct animals, which is fascinating.
Who knew in the Fossil Park area there was a tropical forest; and who knew about Short Necked Giraffe or an elephant that had 4 tusks.
The center was open in December 2017 (funded by National Lottery) and includes: museum center with educational facilities (classroom and auditorium), curio shop, restaurant and plenty of space to enjoy the day up the West Coast.

Hourly tours on weekdays:
10:00, 11:00, 12:00, 13:00, 14:00 and 15:00.
Weekend and public holidays hourly tour times are as follows:
10:00, 11:00, 12:00 and 13:00.
It is advisable to phone to confirm the tour times and to bring a hat or umbrella. Have good walking shoes. The tour to the dig site involves an easy 250 meter walk on a gravel/sand road.***
