With veganism being on the rise, it’s quickly becoming simpler for travellers with plant-based diets to travel around the world and enjoy the local cuisine to the fullest. However, there are still plenty of destinations that vegetarians and vegans may find restrictive. Is South Africa one of those destinations?
We met with Antonia, Cape Town-based Vegan Blogger and Traveller ( http://www.theveganrainbow.com/ ) to learn more about Veganism as well as the Vegan training she offers for hotels and guesthouses and asked why it is so important to educate your staff and team about the future vegan guests:
Q: Firstly, is South Africa a Vegan-friendly destination?
Antonia: Yes, South Africa ‘can’ be seen as a very vegan-friendly destination if the hospitality industry doesn’t shy away from catering for vegan travellers.
Q: Why educate your hotel / guesthouse staff about vegan guests?
Antonia: Veganism is a fast-growing movement worldwide and people have various reasons to go vegan (for the environment, for health reasons or for ethical reasons). Vegan Travel is becoming more and more popular and the tourism/hospitality industry needs to accommodate this new group of travellers. South Africa’s main market is the German market and according to a survey carried out by the market research institute Skopos, 1.3 million people in Germany are vegans.

There are many ways to embrace vegan living. Yet one thing all vegans have in common is a plant-based diet avoiding all animal foods such as meat (including fish, shellfish and insects), dairy, eggs and honey – as well as avoiding animal-derived materials, products tested on animals and places that use animals for entertainment.
Antonia: With my tourism background of 10 years and having been vegan for 6 years, the idea of a comprehensive vegan hospitality training was born.
So here is what you can expect from the Vegan Awareness Training (in-house & private)
Training for Chefs:
Antonia: I’m not doing a “cooking course” as such, because I believe every trained chef can create magic in the kitchen. I mainly focus on the difference between vegan and vegetarian, discuss menu ideas, give ideas for a vegan breakfast, do an extensive product training on vegan products available in South Africa (samples included) and talk about vegan alcohol. I also offer a question-answer session.
Includes: Material, list of vegan wine, some vegan product samples, question & answer session, certificate of participation
Training for Front Office & Reservations:
Antonia: The reservation staff might be the first in contact with the vegan traveller. From here onwards the communication between the hotel staff is vital in order to guarantee a pleasant stay for the vegan guest. Here I mainly focus on the communication between staff and the guest plus educate front office & reservations on how to deal with a vegan guest and the requirements.
Includes: Material (such as vegan-friendly restaurant list, tour info e.g. vegan food tour and other events) question & answer session, certificate of participation
Training for Housekeeping:
Antonia: Housekeeping plays an important role in a hotel. Here I focus on the minibar (training on vegan snacks, beverages etc.), turn down (is the chocolate vegan etc), give ideas for the coffee/tea tray, amenity products and so on.
Includes: Material (such as vegan-friendly product list, some vegan samples, question & answer session, certificate of participation
