Prior to the lockdown, before the world turned upside down, we had the opportunity to visit McGregor for the first time. Yes! I can hardly believe it myself! We enjoyed staying at the picturesque Tangra farm just outside this quaint village.
ABOUT AND LOCATION
In Khoisan, Tanagra means the well-shaded place and was named after an old wild fig tree that grows on the farm. The farm is located outside of McGregor and is part of the Robertson Wine Route and Route 62. The historic Tanagra homestead is a home to their winery that produce handcrafted wines and stylish Grappa and Eau de Vie. This working farm also has private cottages that are the perfect hideaway from city life. Here one can enjoy nature from dawn to dusk.
What makes Tanagra special is the location of their private cottages. They are surrounded by impressive landscapes and mountain views. Not to mention the spectacular sunrises and sunsets. The sounds of nature will wake you and lull you to sleep at night. Tanagra offers 6 self-catering apartments and cottages, some situated at the main farm, close to the historic homestead (Garden cottage, Loft studio, Bottlebrush, Gumtree), with a swimming pool in the garden. The others are tucked away among the wild fynbos of the surrounding hills (Hill cottage, Faraway) and have private plunge pools.
Have you ever felt like this is exactly where you are supposed to be? That’s exactly how we felt driving to Faraway Cottage our home for two nights. Leaving the tar road behind and driving towards this fynbos kingdom, surrounded by mountains, forever endless skies and silence. We were so excited!
Faraway is an Eco cottage with the architect’s design built on the most solitary spot on the farm. The cottage is designed to allow for unobstructed and sweeping views from every room and corner in the cottage. It includes an open plan kitchen with dining table and lounge area with fireplace that opens up to a spacious patio with a private plunge pool. You can take my word for it – it was our favourite place to hang out during our stay. There are two double bedrooms with high sliding doors and windows that bring the outside view inside as far as the eye can see. Our master bedroom had the most spectacular bathroom and bath overlooking the mountains. Sufficient cupboard space, linen and towels provided as well as all the amenities needed, including adapter plugs.
The kitchen was fully equipped. This included a gas stove, crockery, cutlery, glassware, fridge and freezer for your convenience.
There is cellphone reception but no WiFi at the cottage but we hardly missed it. There are books and games available for all the guests and plenty of things to do.
THINGS TO DO
Soak up the views from the plunge pool and indulge in pure relaxation. There are plenty of things you can do. It is a bird-watching heaven. We spend hours on the patio watching the birds who absolutely loved visiting the guests at Faraway Cottage. It is an opportunity to spend time to just be without any distractions
For those hike lovers, Vrolijkheid Nature Reserve is directly bordering with Tanagra. 3 km and 19km hiking trails, as well as a mountain bike trail (8 km), are available for its visitors. Not to mention the abundance of birds for bird lovers; nature’s way of giving the man more than he seeks.
Donkey Sanctuary, home for abused and neglected donkeys, was a rewarding experience.
TANAGRA PLANT TRAIL AND OTHER TRAILS ON THE FARM
As guests at Tanagra farm, one can enjoy several trails and walk the whole farm – the area covering the Karoo veld landscape, around Faraway as well as the river vegetation part down at the main farm at the border, is the little Keizer’s river. An invigorating nature walk which we did on day two of our stay was Tanagra Plant Trail – a 2km wandering walk with interpretive signs detailing 30+ indigenous plants typical of the area. This was both interesting and educational. This is the perfect morning activity before returning to your cottage to unwind with a good book and a glass of wine in the garden or on your stoep. Sounds good, right?
The cottage is equipped with an honesty bar that includes ALL the amazing Tanagra wines for you to enjoy during your stay. It can be settled on departure and of course, you can stock up before you leave. We loved their Rose and European style Eau de Vie, Grappa.
Tanagra is known for producing an exclusive range of handpicked and handcrafted wines, with a focus on single-vineyard wines, typical for the fynbos-scented terroir at the border of the Klein Karoo. Their vineyards are small blocks and more than 20 years old.
Their wine-making philosophy is guided by the principle of ‘minimal interference’, use of traditional methods like natural yeasts (no enzymes added) and whole berry fermentation and they mature their wines in neutral vessels.
Tanagra is our number 1 choice when visiting McGregor and we cannot wait to return one day. Thank you to Annemarie and Erica, the Housekeeping ladies, whom we’ve met on departure. A big Thank you goes to Robert and Anette for their wonderful and warm hospitality.
We are hoping that the lockdown will be over soon and that leisure travel will be allowed again. If you are dreaming of that perfect place to get away from it all, you have found it. Tanagra, where dreams come true, is the ideal getaway. After all “we travel not to escape life, but for life not to escape us”, at Tanagra, you will experience life’s finest, the joys of nature, being in the moment and celebrating it with exceptional wines.
