Remember those family outings; we all had them one way or the other, excitement at seeing something new as promised by mom and dad. Later as puberty struck maybe less so, fact is, this is the stuff memories are made of.

Those were the times when such a day was completed by making the taxing choice between chocolate or strawberry milkshake on a lazy afternoon. Recreate those special moments this Mother and Father’s Day.

The Mother City offers a variety of options for spoils for both mom and dad. As time is always pressing in modern society, consider the following choices.

If Mom or Dad installed the love of books, why not take them to The Book Lounge, the bookshop situated near parliament. They regularly host authors launching their books, an opportunity to meet and greet your favorite author. The Deon Meyer Mystery Tours caters for those who like their thrillers. Tours are audio-visual, get lost in Meyer’s best-selling adventures.

If its culture you after, The First Thursday is a must. “It is a free worldwide monthly art walk in the inner city.”

This is a great way to enjoy the arts, combine this with a bite to eat.  Brothers Giles and James Edwards’ La Tete Restaurant will appeal to the gutsy out there. La Tete was nominated as one of the best new restaurants for 2017 by CNN.. “It’s all about nose-to-tail eating ” The menu changes daily, it can include anything from crispy pig’s ears to pig’s head pie. They are sure to spoil and surprise you, as Chef Giles says “eating here is an education.”  Embrace the heady experience.

Enjoy a walk along the promenade and indulge at Crumbs and Cream’s flagship store in Sea Point. The initiative of sisters Shahar Ben Artzi and Or Lahat. They combined their collective skills and determination, to create the hugely popular delectable cookie and ice-cream sandwiches, whilst also being mothers to their toddlers. Crumbs & Cream takes fun very seriously – everything from the exciting atmosphere and the colourful branding, to the customer service and music. This is a one-of-a-kind experience from beginning to end, enjoying your sweet treat whilst swaying on the swings at the Sea Point store.

Choose any two different cookies from the regularly updated variety of freshly baked cookies. (Think Choc Chip, Red Velvet and even Milk Tart…yum!) Then pick your ice-cream of choice and decide on any of their yummy toppings and spreads. You have created your own personalised Crumbs & Cream sandwich.

As the changing of the seasons is upon us, join The Galileo Open Air Cinema– a treat for whole family and friends alike.  They are situated at different venues across the city, from Hillcrest Quarry   to the Waterfront. Click HERE for season opening times.

The Comedy Club at The Pumphouse Dock Road, V&A Waterfront is another must, support local.  They will be running their usual HALF PRICE SUNDAY Specials. Bookings will open 4 weeks prior. Visit  for shows and ticket prices.

Get out there, how can you not -whatever you choose to do, do so with your loved ones. May Ralph Waldo Emersen’s words guide you.

“To laugh often and love much, to appreciate beauty, to find the best in others, to give one’s self this is to have succeeded.”
