Hospitality is to provide a unique experience for guests. Successful hospitality does this and goes that unexpected extra mile. After all it’s the small things that make the difference and the reason for return guests. The Turbine Boutique Hotel & Spa in Knysna offers all this & more.

Let me tell you about our experience…

Knysna is one of my favorite towns. It was one of the first towns I visited, when moving to South Africa. I instantly fell in love. We are frequent visitors to Knysna, yet surprisingly never to Thesen Island, where the Turbine Hotel is located. It made this trip even more special, as we made a new discovery.

A bit of a history:

“The Turbine Boutique Hotel and Spa was an ambitious project which transformed an old power station into a unique 5 star boutique Knysna hotel. All the old machinery which was used in this power station has been lovingly restored and forms an integral part of the hotel’s aesthetics.”

We were immediately attended to and welcomed by Friendly Staff upon arrival. The swift yet efficient check in was appreciated. We were then proudly shown all the facilities The Turbine Hotel has to offer.

DECOR: We absolutely adored the modern, funky and colourful decor throughout the hotel. This includes both luxury furnishing and parts of the old power station; with clever lighting throughout the interior accentuating the public areas art work – not to forget about glass displays showcasing machinery from the old power station.

The Art throughout the hotel is carefully chosen to compliment the decor and the hotel’s philosophy of passionately promoting local artists and the African culture.

ROOMS: The Hotel offers a choice of seventeen standard rooms, six luxury rooms, a honeymoon suite, and an optional self-catering Lagoon Suite. We stayed in a Luxury Room, located on the main floor.  The Room was spacious and spotlessly clean. Modern amenities such as flat screen TV, Satellite TV, DVD Player, Telephone, Safe, Air conditioning, large desk and Fast Wi-Fi  are well and thoughtfully appointed. A well stocked mini bar, tea and coffee facilities which includes a microwave.  The bathroom has a walk-in shower with bath, flanked by the opulence of Charlotte Rhys products, bathrobes and plush slippers.

The comfortable king size bed with its high quality cotton linen ensured a good night’s sleep.

The delightful outside deck offers the opportunity to relax with your morning coffee or soak up the sun.

DINING: Island Cafe serves breakfasts, lunches and dinners in the yet again colourful setting. The bright chairs and quirky decor will definitely enhance your mood, a boost to set you up for the day.

The Breakfast Buffet offers a selection of fruit, breads, cold cuts and cheeses, juices and excellent coffee.  Menu is available for a variety of hot dishes on offer with friendly waiters at hand.

Dinners are a must. Candlelight and old original refurbished turbines enhance the atmosphere. Tables are set with care. The wine lists offers famous South African wines or order a cocktail from the bar. We started with tasty Soup of the Day, followed by great-tasting Sirloin Steak and delectable Vegetarian Lasagne. Ended with our favorite Creme Brulee. The service was attentive, but not intrusive, and we enjoyed a great evening out.

GASTO PUB: It’s perfect for sun-downers, craft beers or pre-dinner drinks. Pub Style Menu on offer.  The unique decor theme continues in chains hanging from the ceiling and parts of the old power station joining the colourful modern furnishing.  The deck overlooks the canal, perfect for people watching and enjoying the magnificent sunsets.

POOL: Spectacular setting. The pool overlooks the Thesen Island Canal, complimented by the outdoor wooden deck complete with loungers and complimentary towels for hotel guests.  Relax and Unwind the Turbine unique way.

AMANI SPA: What better way to relax, when you are away, than with a bit of pampering? Amani Spa at Turbine Hotel does pampering at its best. The Spa features both single and double treatment rooms. The green theme throughout has a restorative yet cosy feel. We loved our relaxing treatments. The therapists are professional and accommodating. Seriously one of the best treatments we’ve ever had.

SUNSET CRUISE: The Hotel has its own Adventure Center: The Turbine Water Club. They arrange cruises in motorised pontoon barges on the Knysna Lagoon to admire the Knysna Heads and through the canals of the Island, whilst the affable activity expert shares the history of the Island. What a way to enjoy the spectacular sunset, don’t miss it.

PS: do you know the intriguing story of the seahorses? Well… you need to stay at Turbine and do the cruise.

There was nothing, not to like or to improve at the Turbine Hotel. This doesn’t happen often, it was indeed the perfect stay. We are sure to return in the near future, don’t change a thing!
